Day 2 - MS Excel meets SPSS 15

Day 2 of Statistics Business Decision(SBD) begins with us settling down in our seats and being curious about learning as the subject is based on practical knowledge that we will always need as managers and also because it’s on things that we have already come across somewhere earlier and to see its actual use in business makes it more interesting.

The class begins with us being getting actual data about a statistical analysis about the use of two-wheelers among different cities in India. It consist of the data of year 2009, 2010 and 2011.We learned how to use a document made in MS Excel in SPSS 15. Then we modified the documents (labels) to make the data more user friendly and easy to analyse. Then we analysed the data which included calculation of mean, median and mode of the population the cities using two wheeler in both SPSS 15 and MS Excel. The definations are as given below :-

Mean – Mean is the average of the given data.
Median - The median is the numerical value separating the higher half of a data from the lower half.
Mode - The mode is the value that appears most often in a set of data.

We also classified the cities into 5 regions – North, East, West, South and Central and then analyse it more using boxplot and frequency tables in SPSS 15. It gave us some easier ways to analyse data and get more information to help in business.

We also used some random data by which we found out that median gives a far better situation about the data of a group of people rather than the mean of the data among a group of people.
